What does NEMO mean?

It originally meant New England Mountain Equipment, but they quickly decided to drop the acronym and just use the word NEMO. It is pronounced “NEE-mo.” They trademarked their name before they had any idea that Hollywood was creating a heroic little fish by the same name! That’s okay though, because it made the name tough to forget!

What is the story behind NEMO’s logo?

They call the white “N” on the black portion of the logo the “shield” and the red and white portion the “flag.” The shape of the abstract “N” is reminiscent of a coat of arms and of an actual medieval shield. When Cam began NEMO in 2002 and designed the logo, it struck him that medieval armor had some important things in common with modern climbing and mountaineering equipment. Artisans would spend as much as several years making the perfect sword or piece of armor, putting an amount of care into the object proportional to the gravity of its use. Cam wanted NEMO to embody the same spirit. If somebody’s life or comfort would depend on NEMO gear, the company should put tremendous care into making it. The letters “NEMO” on the flag are meant to loosely resemble shapes from nature. The “e” is like a river, the “m” like mountains and the “o” like a pond.

Are your tents manufactured entirely in the USA?

NEMO continually seeks out manufacturers who are capable of handling the sophistication and quality we demand for our products. In some cases, these manufacturers are domestic, but we also look to overseas manufacturing and resources to accomplish this. NEMO’s manufacturers are world-class, regardless of location, and held to extremely high standards. We also take into consideration the ecological footprint of the supply chain when determining the manufacturer. When raw goods and subcomponents are located internationally, these constraints often lead to an overseas manufacturer. When goods are based in the United States, we often look to a domestic manufacturer. In 2008, we launched our Ditto™ line of up-cycled and waste-saving products, many of which are produced entirely in the US. In 2012, we launched our first commercial 100% USA made tent. Additionally, many of our tents in the military line are made entirely in the USA, with 100% Berry compliancy.

What is NEMO planning to introduce in the future?

NEMO is striving to achieve the best possible sleep system and camping accessory designs for different applications. Expect radical new designs and ongoing improvements. NEMO is also constantly in research and development of other products for outdoor adventure. Every NEMO product will share the same commitment to quality and fearless innovation.

What organizations does NEMO contribute to?

NEMO realizes the importance of protecting our natural environment as well as cultivating an interest in the outdoors for our youth. Without our forests, parks, beaches and other open spaces, we would have no place to play and do the things we love. And without engaging today’s youth, we will have no source for protecting these wild places for future generations. We support numerous organizations through donations, product giveaways, or volunteer efforts such as Conservation Alliance, Surfrider, NH Teen Legacy, IMBA, Wounded Warrior, Humane Society, and the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation.

How do you determine the temperature rating of your sleeping bags and pads?

How do you determine the temperature rating of your sleeping bags and pads? - See more at: http://www.nemoequipment.com/support/faq/#sthash.cG8xFELk.dpuf

The temperature rating in each sleeping bag is derived from a combination of factors. First, there’s a formula for the amount of down in a given size bag to reach a certain warmth rating. That’s just a place to start. Next, bags are tested in the lab so far as possible. All the Spoon™ series bags are tested according to EN 13537. Some bags, because of being backless or rated for extreme cold temps, cannot be tested according to the EN procedure. We also make sure to examine all the different sleeping bag styles with NEMO’s thermal camera for cold spots. Lastly, but probably most importantly, bags are tested in the field with our A.P.T. program, some of them for more than a year. This is the ultimate proof that the design and temperature rating are appropriate. The lab can only tell you so much compared to using the products in the field.
The sleeping pads follow a fairly similar process. To determine the temperature rating of our sleeping pads, NEMO uses a combination of R value testing, long term user testing feedback in multiple environments, and further material component lab testing.
It’s important to remember that the temperature rating is meant solely as a guide, and is not a guarantee. The comfort level each user experiences is influenced by many factors including metabolic rate, type of shelter, insulation level of the ground you are sleeping on (snow, platform, dirt), clothing worn when sleeping, sleeping position, etc.

What is the difference between packed and minimum weight?

  • Packed weight is the total weight of all the included components shipped with a tent from the factory. It includes the stuff sack, tent body, vestibule, poles, repair kit, instructions, tags, stickers, bag, etc. Minimum weight is the total weight of tent body, poles, and fly (if applicable). In the case of AirSupported™ tents, we count the airbeam and pump in the minimum weight since there are no poles. Stakes, stuff sack, guy lines, extra vestibules, etc. are not included. Basically, these are the bare essentials that you would need to make a waterproof shelter.
