  • Patagonia makes phenomenal midlayer pieces that range from warm to super warm(R1-R4). Meet the R1, the lightest of the family but she still works hard to keep you warm, dry and comfortable. Slightly stretchy and patterned to slide easily over under layers, the R1 saves you from the annoyance of constant adjusting between layers. Plus, the R1 compresses down to nearly nothing, which is perfect for packing!
  • Features:
  • Exclusive to Patagonia, a new Polartec Power Grid fabric (with Polygiene permanent odor control) is lighter and more breathable than before but with the same outstanding stretch and durability
  • Raglan sleeves for increased mobility and off-shoulder seaming for comfort under a pack
  • Pullover silhouette has deep-center front zipper with a soft, kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • One left chest pocket has Slim Zip install, zipper garage and mesh pocket bag
  • Cuffs and hem are simply and comfortably finished with a cover stitch
  • Fabric: 6.3-oz Polartec Power Grid 93% recycled polyester/7% spandex with Polygiene permanent odor control. Fabric is bluesign® approved
  • Weight: 279 g (9.87 oz)
  • Fit: Slim

I bought this fleece to serve as my one and only mid-weight during my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Versatility is key on the trail, and thats why this piece is so valuable. On frosty mornings, freezing nights or chilly days hiking Id throw on my R1 and I was good to go. Its also great to pair with a rain jacket or under a down jacket in extreme conditions. After 5 months of daily use it was still looking and smelling good enough to go take on another thru-hike, the Pacific Crest Trail. It survived that trail as well and kept me equally warm and comfy and it still soft to the touch. On trail or in town, this is a must have! Pro-tip: on warm nights stuff it in a stuff sack and use it as a pillow!

a year-round must-have

The R1 is a staple for me 365 days out of the year. In the cooler months, obviously, it's a great piece for wearing any day of the week. In the summer months, I keep it at work to wear when the A/C is blasting frigid air. The colors are rich and vibrant and the fabric is so comfortable. I also love the 1/4-zip which looks put-together even when being super-cozy.
