  • Mention St. Louis and most people think of the famous arch. Residents and visitors-in-the-know appreciate the many outdoor recreational opportunities the Gateway to the West has to offer. With three new hikes and updated text, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: St. Louis points hikers to the best outdoor trails and rambles within easy reach of the city. Whether walking in the footsteps of Louis and Clark, exploring amazing rock formation in the Pickle Springs Natural Area, or trekking along a portion of the longest rails-to-trails paths in the U.S., hikers are sure to be amazed at the diversity of outdoor experiences awaiting them. The included hikes are located in Missouri as well as its neighbor, Illinois.
  • About the Author: Steve Henry
  • Steve Henry grew up on a farm in the rolling hills of central Kansas, spending much of his youth working under the blue skies of the plains. After earning Bachelor`s degrees in Marketing and Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University, he served a seven-year sentence in the offices of an insurance company.
  • Missing the outdoor life, he escaped in 1985 to cycle across the continent twice, including one trek from Anchorage Alaska to Key West, Florida.
  • Since then he has organized triathlons, led bicycle and backpack tours, written articles for Cycle St. Louis (a local bicycling publication), and enjoyed many camping trips.

I gave this book to my father for Christmas last year and he was able to find parks and trails that, as an avid hiker and native of StL, even he hadn't heard of yet. I wish the pictures were in full color but the trail descriptions have been spot on and the variety of hikes have let us find a couple new favorites!

Hikers Guide to Our Area

I have turned to this book so many times to find a hike for myself, for customers and for Scout groups. This is a very comprehensive book that gives particulars about each hike including info on whether or not I can bring my dog! The maps are very readable and the descriptions of the areas are very accurate. In our OFallon, IL location, I frequently sell this book to new residents to the area. The table of contents organizes the hikes by length, difficulty, type of terrain and child friendly among other options.

This is the book I refer to over and over when I want to get outside. I like the way the book is organized with an index for short hikes, long hikes, easy hikes, difficult hikes, hikes for kids, scenic hikes, winter hikes, and a few others I've forgotten! Each hike has an overview about each trail and its amenities. I only wish the book had larger maps, guess I need to have reading glasses!

This is a great resource for anyone looking to explore the St. Louis and surrounding areas. The organization and depth of information is very helpful when planning an outing. The author breaks it down to region, length, difficulty and more! Directions to the trailheads and even coordinates and narrative descriptions have been very helpful. Also a great gift idea because there are options for any type of hiker, walker, or trail runner.
