Pint Night to benefit Missouri Whitewater Association

We kick off the 2017 #getOutside EXPO with a night to remember as Schlafly presents the first of our 2017 Al-Pint Night Fundraisers. Jackson Kayak invites you to join us at Alpine Shop Kirkwood on Friday, March 3 from 6 to 9 pm to raise funds for the Missouri Whitewater Association to aid its continuing efforts to encourage the growth of paddling and the protection of our waterways.

2017 is also the 50th Annual Missouri State Whitewater Championships, held March 18-19 on the Saint Francis River near Fredricktown, Mo. In honor of this occasion, $10 at the Pint Night gets you a commemorative 50th Anniversary Pint Glass, plus two free pours of some fantastic Schlafly beer. We have a total of 145 pint glasses. Once we sell out, we're out!

Saturday, March 4

10 am: "Wake-Up with Yoga" with Sarah Thornton, Owner of Yoga with Sarah 

Join us from the moment we open our doors for a free yoga session brought to you by Yoga with Sara. Sarah Thornton has been teaching Yoga since September of 2014 and is a registered restorative yoga teacher. She specializes in Restorative Yoga, yin yoga, gentle yoga and slow flow vinyasa. She received her 200 hour teacher training from Urban Breath Yoga in May of 2014 and completed the Relax and Renew training with Judith Hanson Lasater in October of 2015. Her goal is to ensure that students leave her classes feeling calm, energized and more connected to themselves.

 

11 am: "Endurance Training for Cycling, Paddling, Hiking & Trail Running" with Sara Cogan, Director of Endurance Program at the St. Louis Sports Medicine & Training Center 

Whatever activity you're looking to improve–or even just begin–you can see huge gains the use of a coach. Sara Cogan will take us through programs perfect for all of Alpine Shop's endurance-based activities. Director of Endurance Program at Sports Medicine & Training Center, Cogan has 18 years of experience as an Exercise Physiologist. Prior to SMTC, she worked in wellness, cardiac rehabilitation and disease management, dealing with diabetes, heart disease, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, asthma, cancer, depression and physical disability. Currently, her focus is on coaching endurance athletes, and she works closely with members of the SMTC Endurance Team. She holds certifications from USA Triathlon as a Level 1 coach, and from USA Cycling as a Level 3 coach.

 

Noon: "Using Nutrition to Fuel a Better Life" with Heidi Williams, owner of Real Nutrition

As a dietician, Heidi Williams focuses on using balanced whole foods to help people meet their optimal health states. She is a firm believer in food's natural ability to prevent and manage many disease states and is a passionate about educating people on the raw poets of food. Williams is also a champion endurance athlete, with first-place finishes at last year's Berryman Trail 50 Miler and Rockin' Rockwoods 53k. During this program, Williams will go over ways to utilize nutrition and fitness to bring out the best you.

 

Noon: "Rig Your Fishing Kayak the Professional Way" with Jason Griffith, Member of Jackson Kayak Pro Fishing Staff

Jason Griffith, a native of Kansas City, and a member of Jackson Kayak's Pro Fishing Staff will be on-hand in the paddle tent providing a demo on rigging your fishing kayak the professional way.

 

Noon–4 pm: "The Ultimate Guide to Exploring St. Louis and the Ozarks" with Steve Henry, Author and Explorer

PLEASE NOTE: Steve Henry will not be presenting, but instead will be available for one-on-one talks and to sign his books from noon until 4 pm. Author of 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of St. Louis, Best Tent Camping: Missouri and the Ozarks and the Mountain Biker's Guide to the Ozarks, Henry is one of the true experts on exploring the wilder side of our city and state. Discover the best places to explore with the preeminent guide our area has to offer.

 

1 pm: "Surviving the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails" with Lindsay "Outro" Brisko, Alpine Shop Outfitter & Thru-Hiker

Lindsay Brisko is an experienced hiker, who enjoys helping others learn how to maximize enjoyment during their outdoor experiences. In 2015, Brisko put her backpacking skills to the test by thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT), a five month journey over 2,189 miles. On trail, she learned the do’s and don’ts of ultralight hiking and gained expertise in the areas of ultralight backpacking equipment, food preparation and safety concerns. Lindsay had such a blast on the AT that she completed the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2016. Along with utilizing skills she honed on the AT, Lindsay also became familiar with desert survival skills and high altitude hiking and glissading techniques on the snow-covered ridges of the Sierra Nevada Range. With two legs of the triple crown completed, Lindsay has her sights set on someday completing the Continental Divide Trail (CDT).

 

2 pm: "Exploring the Ozark Trail - Over 400 Miles of Trails in Missouri's Ozarks" with Ken Kurtz, Chair of Education Outreach & Race Director for the Ozark Trail Association

The Ozark Trail Association is grassroots, non-profit voluteer group that was founded in 2002 to continue the construction, maintenance and promotion of the Ozark Trail. The Ozark Trail (or OT) is nearly 400 miles of trail that wind through the Missouri Ozarks , the result of an idea conceived in 1977 to run a trail from St. Louis to the Arkansas border and eventually connect with the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas to create a 700-mile thru-trail. The work continues today, but you can still explore hundreds of miles of trails right now. Find some of the highlights of the trail and how you can help complete this dream.

 

3 pm: "Gateway Off-Road Cyclists' Plan for STL Trails in 2017" with David Krajcovic

The Gateway Off-Road Cyclists was founded in 1998 by a handful of St. Charles-area mountain bikers. GORC has since been responsible for the creation of over 80 miles of new multi-use trail construction on public land in the St. Louis area and maintenance of over 160 miles of trail in Eastern Missouri. Alpine Shop highly recommends anyone that has used a trail in the St. Louis area check out GORC's presentation and look into helping out in 2017 whether you're a mountain biker or not. Chances are, you've used their trails either way.

 

4 pm: "Paddling and Camping Gourmet Cooking Show" with Marty Koch, Award-Winning Outdoor Chef & Former Alpine Shop Director of Programming

An avid camper, paddler and wilderness traveler, Marty Koch's highly-entertaining and hands-on cooking show demonstrates how to eat well while camping, paddling or traveling in the wilds of America. Grab a sample, too! Koch was the 2008 and 2009 winner of the Aluminum Chef Outdoor Cooking Competition in Madison, Wis. Many of you will also know him from his time as Alpine Shop's Director of Programming or as a St. Louis County Parks Ranger. He now spends his time touring the American wilderness. He is a nature photographer as well as a public speaker and teacher.

 

5 pm: "The Rivergator - a Paddler's Guide to the Middle and Lower Mississippi River" with Mike Clark, one of the most accomplished canoeists and guides in America

Mike Clark has over 10,000 miles of big river experience and has led large and small groups on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers since 2001. During this presentation, he offers the opportunity to learn about expedition paddling on the longest free-flowing water trail in the continental United States - "The Rivergator" - 1155 miles from St. Louis to the Gulf of Mexico on the Mississippi.

 

6 pm: "Ultra-Marathon Canoe & Kayak Racing on the Big Rivers" with Bryan Hopkins.

A self-proclaimed "paddling addict," Hopkins was one of the first batch of racers 10 years ago to compete in the Missouri River 340 (MR340) and has grown to be a consistent contender in these long flat river races. He will share tips on rigging your boat for distance racing, nutritional strategies, training and fundamentals such as boat selection and race strategy.

 

Sunday March 5

11:30 am: "Hiking the Camino De Santiago Trail" with Donna Erickson & Louise Bullock

17 days after she retired from a long career as a social worker, Donna Erickson started her 550 mile hike from the foothills of the Pyrenees in France, across northern Spain and to the coastal town of Cape Finisterre. In her own words, she said she had "absolutely no business thinking" she could complete her journey, but she did. And she loves to help others do the same. This presentation highlights Erickson's journey, but also includes a gear list and tips and tricks for prospective pilgrims as well.

1 pm: "The Front Porch to the Back Yard - Connecting the Gateway Arch to the Katy Trail" with Ralph Pfremmer, Trailnet CEO

Ralph Pfremmer, Trailnet CEO, offers a vision of what our region is and what it can become - a unique combination of a rich urban cycling experience and an unparalleled path through unspoiled countryside along a river that provided inspiration for the Gateway Arch. A tour from the Arch past Citygarden, Cortex, Forest Park and Washington University, across the Missouri River to America's first viticultural area, provides an experience found only in St. Louis. A paradise for history buffs, wine lovers and families is explored and explained in and enables readers to create explorations of their own - from city to country, present to past - from our front porch to our backyard!

 

2 pm: "Nature and Landscape Photography Techniques for Better Photos" by Marty Koch, Professional Photographer and former Alpine Shop Programming Director

Learn the techniques professional photographers use to make striking images of the natural world. Topics include cameras, lenses, basic composition techniques, photographing landscapes, wildflowers, wildlife, and much more.

Shaw Bloom Trail 10k/20k

Spring on to the Trails !

Join us for the most beautiful Trail Run in Eastern Missouri with a 10k or 20k Trail Run through the Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit, Mo., on Saturday, March 25.

This spectacular 10k loop course covers a wide variety of terrains: from grass meadows and gravel hiking paths to rocky single track and dirt roads, and from steep cliffs and rolling hills to even a boardwalk above a lily-filled lake!

All participants receive a custom logo long sleeve technical t-shirt from The North Face along with pre-and post-race snacks and beverages. Registration was limited to the first 400 for this race and sold out in early February. Volunteers are still welcome.

Our most popular film festival of the year returns! We've hosted the World Tour for the past 25 years here in St. Louis and we're looking forward to bringing it back for at least that long.

This international traveling festival celebrates the most inspiring action, environmental and adventure films from the Banff Mountain Film Festival each year. And each year, we get a little more inspired to discover something about ourselves that can't be found inside a cubicle's walls.
