This ATC is one of the best all around belay devices you can buy! Its gym performance is great since it has teeth on one side to help assist with breaking. The guide functionality is fantastic when going out to hit a multi-pitch crag.

I have a couple of belay device options in my kit, but this is the only one I have two of. I prefer a standard device like this to an assist lock, as it doesn't twist my rope up as much. The grooves give me added friction when belaying someone larger than me and setup for belaying from above is pretty straight forward. The regular ATC is perfect for new climbers or those not planning on top belaying. But if you want the option of belaying from the top, this is an excellent option.
